About Our Authors


Jennifer Ach is a junior at a university in northern Pennsylvania. She is majoring in chemistry, but has a strong interest in history. "Maria Smolka, Young Victim."

Maude Ennick is a dairy farmer who lives in an old farmhouse near Delmar, New York. Her uncles (the Gibson Train Wreck) were from Elmira, New York. "The Gibson Train Wreck."


Kennedy Hull is a junior at Cornell University. "Our Own Book."

Diane Janowski is a local history writer and publisher of the New York History Review. She has been actively involved in the history of Chemung County since 1979, including being the editor of the Chemung Historical Journal from 1999-2006. I co-authored the book Images of America: The Chemung Valley with Allen C. Smith. The book is a pictoral history of Chemung County, New York. Mr. Smith and I have also worked on an extensive historical photography documentary in Pointe Coupée Parish, Louisiana called Pointe Coupée at the Millennium- pcatm.org. She is a fifth-generation farmer, and has a web design business in Elmira, New York. She is the webmaster of NYHR and promises to make this a heck of a local history site. Dr. Bradley Rugelstein is a cardiologist in Astoria, Queens, New York. As a child, he spent many summers with his grandparents at Skaneatles, New York. "The Owego, Elmira, and Bath Stage Coach."

Ned Stihm, a retired newspaper man from Scranton, Pennsylvania, now lives in the Adirondacks. His ancestors were originally from the Southern Tier of New York State. "Let Us Entertain You."

Allen C. Smith has lived his life in Horseheads and Elmira, New York, aside from a brief residency in Brooklyn, NY, . After a professional career as a fine arts service provider (curator, gallery owner, art handler), Mr. Smith has returned to his original path as a producing fine artist. His interest in regional history, and friendship with Diane Janowski, have manifested in several publications and projects. He contributes the column "99 Years Ago" to this publication. "99 Years Ago in Elmira, New York."

Joe Swanke is a resident of Swartwood, New York. He enjoys hunting, card playing, meditation, and cooking. "Let Us Entertain You."

Peggy Whittier is a retired middle school English teacher. She was born in Corning, but lived most of her life in Elmira.
